What’s new with YU?

Our YU student fundraising initiatives have been a roaring success, so we wanted to give you the latest from YuCycle and YuFund.

Thanks to YuCycle 2016, promising sportsmen and women at York will be able to fulfil their potential. Over 250 riders took part in a range of challenge rides last June, and thanks to their entrance fees, sponsored income and sponsorship from a range of business partners, the ride raised £9,600. This enabled the expansion of York’s Focus Team programme.

For students with the talent to excel in their chosen sporting field, the cost of the vital additional training facilities and equipment, strength and conditioning, sports psychology and nutritional support, and entrance to all important qualifying competitions are difficult to fund on a student loan. Furthermore the time required to train means that taking a job isn’t feasible.

York’s Focus Team programme opens the door across all areas of sports development, and in 2016/17 thanks to you we’ll be able to support 10 scholars of national or international standard with a bursary of £500.

YuCycle 2017 takes place on Sunday 11 June. Featuring a range of challenge rides for all abilities across the beautiful Yorkshire countryside, and family cycling fun at the velodrome and cycle track, it’s a great reason for a weekend in York.

YuFund is continuing to support students where and when they need it most. From individual awards to the innovative projects that help set York apart, YuFund brings gifts of all sizes together to make the biggest change. Thank you to all donors to YuFund, who back projects and opportunities that help students to reach their potential in their studies, career development and participation, and also benefit the University or the wider York community.

The YuFund disbursement group is due to meet on Monday 5 December to consider applications from innovative projects across campus, which focus on contributing to the student experience and enhancing our community. We look forward to sharing how funds have been allocated in the next edition of Changing Lives.
