The life of a legacy

Thanks to those donors who have left a gift in their will, we can make a world of difference to generations to come

Having studied Social Work at York, Maria Bourboulis recently left almost half a million pounds in her will to support talented postgraduate students in the Sociology and Social Policy and Social Work Departments.

Originally from Greece, Maria graduated in 1989. She felt strongly that the University gave her a great foundation for the rest of her professional life. Maria’s gift allows many more students to benefit from the same opportunity that she did.

The Department of Sociology is ranked 1st in the UK for research quality, and the Department for Social Policy and Social Work is 1st in the UK for research impact. Maria’s legacy will help us to ensure that these Departments continue to be driven by excellence in both research and teaching.

This September will see the first two postgraduate students benefit directly from Maria’s wonderful gift.

The brightest students from all over the world will come to York long after I’m gone to study subjects we haven’t yet dreamed of in ways we can’t even imagine. It is for these students that I’ve made a bequest to York.”
