Athletes can struggle on a student budget, but thanks to your generosity our students are the sporting heroes of tomorrow.
Kayaker Nick Romain is at home on the Ouse or in the library. Studying for a BSc in Environmental Geography, Nick combines his academic work with tough training on the water and in the gym, in preparation for international level competition. He has already represented his country in two World Championships, and is now embarking on the GB selection process for a spot in the Marathon Kayaking competitions at the upcoming European and World Championships – races in which he will test himself against the opposition, and the elements, over a 30km course.
Nick is sponsored by Santander Universities UK as an Elite Athlete, and their funding over the past year has helped him purchase a much-needed new boat. He’s clear about the difference this has made to him: “Training to compete at the highest level requires not only my commitment and that of my support team but also funding. Without the support of Santander Universities I would not have been able to gain selection for the European championships.” Nick also receives support from YuFund, our financial resource for departments, student clubs and societies which exists thanks to donations from alumni, staff and friends.
I find that continuing to train whilst doing my studying helps me to attain a good work/sport balance and I have to be very disciplined to put the same effort into both.
And now you can help to raise funds for students like Nick, our sporting stars of tomorrow. On 5 June 2016 we’ll host our fourth YuCycle event, a sportive challenge organised by the University of York, York Sport Village, and the University of York Cycle Club under the banner of British Cycling. This year’s event will not only feature great support en route with feedstops, marshals and medical backup, but also chip timing for riders who want to record their achievements. And cycle taster sessions at York Sport Village during the day means that there’s something for all the family!
Choose from three routes through the beautiful Yorkshire Wolds (25km, 50km, 100km), and with your help we hope to raise £20,000 to develop sporting potential at York. This will not only give our most talented sports people the best chance of reaching their goals, but will encourage more exceptional young people to choose York as a place to study. You can pay a registration fee to take part, a proportion of which will support sporting talent at York, or secure a free place by raising a minimum sponsorship of £40 for the University of York Sports Performance Programme through JustGiving.
