Happy Birthday YuStart!

It’s been three years since we took a leap into the crazy world of crowdfunding – and we haven’t looked back since!

YuStart was the UK’s first bespoke university crowdfunding website, created specifically to encourage student development and to support innovative projects that might otherwise not be funded.

YuStart supports all sorts of projects, from big to small. Students can raise funds for projects of any size, but we like them to be passionate about their project!

Empowering students to use their own skills and networks to achieve their dreams has led to investment and support totalling £106,000 in just three years. This investment in student projects has inspired others to succeed and has allowed our students to take their projects to new audiences. Many alumni also support YuFund, which provides matching donations to successful YuStart projects.

In the spotlight

There have been some fantastic projects funded through YuStart. The innovative nature of the projects and our ability to spread the word online has led to national and regional media coverage, and has highlighted what York students can achieve. Two of our most successful projects, AstroDuck and AstroCampus, have captured the imagination of the wider community. The AstroCampus is particularly popular, and offers outreach sessions to local schools and the wider community.

Small gifts make a big difference

Thank you to everyone who has supported a YuStart project to date –  your gifts really make a difference. It’s clear that many of you have a close attachment to your old University clubs and societies, and are keen to help and support them, so YuStart offers a great way to stay involved. And remember project supporters receive a small ‘reward’ as a thank you, and are kept updated on the project as it progresses!

Empowering our students

We asked students from past projects if they had a message for supporters, and to explain what difference YuStart made to their projects:

Well, other than the thank you that you so richly deserve, we must say that your generosity has helped us to buy a new boat, which has allowed our women to compete at the level that they deserve, and has meant that we can get more people into rowing. Thanks to you, we’re able to get more people into this fantastic sport of ours – and who knows, we may inspire a future Olympian to get involved in rowing for the first time in York because of the facilities that we have to offer!”

We really wouldn’t have two new common rooms in our College without the support of those who donated. They really have helped transform the social spaces Langwith has available for its students.”
